The Drawing’s Hidden Layer

Chapter 07 - The Drawing’s Hidden Layer

The crayon drawing had been mounted on thin cardboard.

A document specialist noticed the cardboard was heavier near the red heart.

Inside the backing was a micro-storage card.

Anna had hidden it beneath Lily’s drawing years earlier.

The card contained a video recorded the night before her death.

Anna sat in her study.

Her face looked tired but focused.

“James, I hope I am wrong,” she began. “I hope this becomes an embarrassing recording we laugh about when Lily is older.”

She explained the missing foundation money, Victoria’s identity, and Marcus’s shell companies.

Then she said something James was not prepared to hear.

“Victoria told me she approached you because she wanted access to the family. I do not know whether that remained her only reason.”

Anna looked away from the camera.

“She may love you. People can love someone and still use them. That is what makes the danger difficult to recognize.”

James stopped the video.

The sentence removed the comforting simplicity of believing Victoria had never felt anything.

Anna continued.

She had confronted Victoria and offered a private settlement if the money was returned and Lily’s trust left untouched.

Victoria refused.

“She believes the Bennett family stole her life before she was born. She thinks taking control is restoration.”

Anna then held up Lily’s drawing.

“If this reaches you through our daughter, it means the adults failed to act in time.”

Lily had drawn the picture five years earlier, shortly before Anna died. Anna hid the card and letter behind the frame, expecting to retrieve them after the board meeting.

She never returned.

The gift had not been created for James’s birthday.

Lily found it, added new wrapping, and believed it was simply a message from her mother.

The child had unknowingly delivered the evidence Anna could not.
