Lily’s Room

Chapter 09 - Lily’s Room

Victoria had changed Lily’s bedroom three times.

First, she removed Anna’s photographs because they caused “sleep disruption.”

Then she replaced Lily’s pink walls with gray because bright colors looked immature.

Finally, she moved the child to a smaller room in the east wing so the nursery suite could become Victoria’s private dressing room.

James had accepted each explanation.

He told himself blended families required adjustment.

After the board suspension, he entered Lily’s room alone.

The shelves held books Victoria approved.

The closet contained clothes selected by a stylist.

Anna’s handmade quilt was missing.

James found it folded inside a storage trunk in the basement.

Beside it were birthday cards from Anna’s parents, school drawings, and letters addressed to Lily that James had never seen.

Victoria had controlled the child’s connection to her mother one object at a time.

No single act appeared unforgivable.

Together they created erasure.

James sat on the basement floor holding the quilt.

Marta, the housekeeper, found him there.

“I should have seen it.”

Marta did not comfort him with a lie.

“Yes.”

He looked up.

She continued.

“But seeing late is not the same as refusing to see.”

Marta admitted she had witnessed Victoria discarding letters and removing photographs. She feared losing her job and immigration sponsorship.

James understood how the household hierarchy protected cruelty.

Victoria did not need everyone to agree.

She needed each person to believe speaking carried a private cost.

James created a protected employee-reporting system the next day.
