Mia Returns to the Water

Chapter 12 - Mia Returns to the Water

Mia Torres returned to Grayhaven six months after the accident.

Her shoulder had healed. Her fear of rescue boats had not.

She stood at the station gate while the new cadet class prepared for a calm-water drill.

Elias approached without the orange whistle.

“Do you want to watch?”

“I want to try.”

He did not praise her courage.

He asked what she needed.

“A boat with no remote system.”

Mara had designed one.

The new training boats included mechanical shutdown overrides, public maintenance logs, and independent recorders controlled by the cadets as well as supervisors.

Mia inspected every compartment herself.

Caleb checked the flare locker.

No blue canisters remained. Grayhaven returned to internationally standardized orange smoke signals.

Nathan worked as an ordinary rescue trainee while the selection board reviewed applicants for command.

Some people mocked the former director for cleaning equipment.

He kept cleaning.

Mia entered the boat.

When the engine started, her breathing changed.

Elias sat on the dock.

“We can stop.”

“Not yet.”

She moved ten yards.

Then twenty.

At the old accident marker, she asked to turn back.

No one called it failure.

The next week, she went farther.

Recovery became a series of distances she chose.

Mia later joined the equipment oversight council. Her first proposal required every cadet to access the raw data recorded during training.

“No child should discover after an accident that adults owned the only version of what happened,” she said.

The rule passed unanimously.
