The Woman the Harbor Buried

Chapter 06 - The Woman the Harbor Buried

Mara moved quickly.

She struck Paul’s wrist with a steel flashlight. The flare gun fired into the ceiling, showering sparks across the concrete.

Officer Ortiz tackled him before he recovered.

Caleb stared at the woman he knew only from photographs.

She was forty-two now. A scar crossed her left temple. One hand shook slightly when she lowered the flashlight.

“Mara?” Elias whispered.

She looked at him.

“Hi, Dad.”

Caleb did not move.

Mara’s eyes filled.

“You were four the last time I saw you.”

“You were dead.”

“No.”

“You let me think you were.”

Mara accepted the words without defense.

After discovering the dumping network, she arranged to deliver evidence to federal investigators. Paul intercepted her boat near the lighthouse.

During the struggle, the vessel struck the rocks. Mara suffered a head injury and fell into the water.

A research crew found her miles offshore with no identification.

She spent months recovering under the name Jane Miller.

When memories returned, she tried to contact Elias. Grant’s people appeared near Caleb’s preschool the same day.

“I thought distance was the only protection I had left.”

Caleb turned away.

Every adult in his family used protection to explain absence.

Elias looked at his daughter.

“You could have trusted me.”

“I watched them change clocks, records, and police reports. I did not know who they controlled.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

His father had controlled him too.

Mara had remained near Blue Lighthouse, secretly collecting evidence with a federal environmental investigator. She returned to the control room after seeing the blue flare activate the old relay.

“The canister was mine,” she said.

Elias frowned.

Mara had placed a harmless tracking dye inside one flare to identify which tunnel Grant used.

Paul found it, moved it into Rescue Boat Seven’s equipment, and turned the dye into part of the staged accident.

“He used your trap against us,” Elias said.

“Yes.”

Mara removed a small drive from inside the bell mechanism.

“This contains the dumping records, but not the authorization ledger.”

“Where is that?”

“Inside Rescue Boat Seven.”

The boat had been impounded after the accident.

Grant ordered it moved to a private salvage yard that morning.

By dawn, it was scheduled to be crushed.
