Fire in the Clock House

Chapter 08 - Fire in the Clock House
Firefighters reached the clock house within six minutes.
The lower room burned hottest, directly beneath the tide recorder.
Grant stood behind the barrier telling reporters the fire proved Grayhaven’s infrastructure was dangerous.
Elias pushed past him.
“You started this.”
Grant looked wounded.
“You have lost all perspective.”
Mara appeared beside her father.
Grant’s expression failed for one second.
He had not known she survived.
“Hello, Grant,” she said.
Reporters turned toward them.
Grant recovered.
“This woman is not Mara Reed.”
Mara held up her original Coast Engineering identification card.
“Your brother signed my death declaration without a body.”
Grant signaled to security.
Officer Ortiz blocked them.
Firefighters carried out the clock’s brass gear assembly. Most of the archive had burned.
Caleb noticed black soot around the face of the large clock.
The minute hand remained frozen at 12:07.
He climbed the exterior ladder before anyone stopped him.
Behind the clock face, the metal casing was cool.
The fire had not reached it.
Mara had designed a fireproof compartment inside the hands.
Caleb opened the minute hand with a screwdriver from Elias’s toolbox.
The waterproof tube slid out.
Inside was the authorization ledger.
Grant had hidden it there twelve years earlier, assuming the fire would destroy the clock. The relay stopped the hands at the exact location of the compartment each time it activated.
Mara had built the clock to reveal tampering.
Grant had used it so often that it kept pointing toward his hiding place.
The ledger listed illegal dumping payments, forged inspections, private surveillance, and the land-transfer scheme.
It also contained a payment authorized three days before Mara disappeared:
MERCER, NATHAN — EDUCATION TRUST.
Nathan was eighteen at the time.
Grant had placed stolen money into his son’s college fund.
Nathan stared at the page.
“I did not know.”
Grant stepped closer.
“Everything I did was for this family.”
Mara shook her head.
“No. Everything you did used your family as a receipt.”
Grant left before police obtained an arrest warrant.
His car was found near the ferry terminal.
The commission’s emergency account had been emptied.
