The Bell at Blue Lighthouse

Chapter 05 - The Bell at Blue Lighthouse
Elias, Nathan, and Caleb reached Blue Lighthouse in a police launch before midnight.
Grant had ordered the port patrol not to assist them. Officer Lena Ortiz used county authority to override him.
The lighthouse stood on a narrow rock island beyond the breakwater. Its blue-painted lantern room had not operated in twelve years.
At 12:06, the building remained silent.
At 12:07, a deep bell sounded below them.
Not above.
They followed the vibration into the basement.
Behind a rusted fuel cabinet stood a narrow tunnel descending beneath the island. Fresh electrical cables ran along the wall.
The tunnel ended in a hidden control room.
Monitors displayed live feeds from harbor cameras, rescue radios, and navigation beacons. One screen showed the dock where Grant spoke with Paul Danner.
Another showed Mara Reed’s old house.
Caleb stepped back.
“They watched us.”
Elias found shelves of archived tapes labeled by date.
The tape from Mara’s disappearance was missing.
A computer terminal requested an access phrase.
Caleb remembered the photograph.
Follow the sound.
He counted the bell’s intervals. Seven short vibrations followed one long pulse.
Mara had taught him Morse code when he was four, before she vanished from his memory.
The pattern spelled HOME.
The terminal opened.
A file began playing.
Mara appeared on-screen wearing a yellow marine jacket.
“If Dad is watching this, the clock worked.”
Elias gripped the table.
Mara explained that Grant used the lighthouse system to divert rescue boats from illegal dumping operations. Paul altered logs. Commission members received payments from developers.
She had copied the evidence.
“If I disappear, do not let them call me reckless.”
Caleb moved closer to the screen.
Mara looked directly into the camera.
“And Caleb, if you are old enough to understand this, I am sorry I left you with questions.”
The recording ended abruptly.
A door slammed behind them.
Paul Danner stood in the tunnel holding a flare gun.
“You should have left the dead alone,” he said.
Nathan stepped between Paul and Caleb.
Paul aimed at him.
Then the lighthouse bell rang again.
A second hidden door opened behind the monitors.
A woman with gray-streaked dark hair stood in the doorway.

Elias stopped breathing.
Mara Reed was alive.
