Mara Comes Home

Chapter 13 - Mara Comes Home
Mara moved into the small apartment above Elias’s workshop.
Caleb stayed with them on weekends.
The arrangement did not feel like a reunion at first.
It felt like three people carefully sharing a kitchen.
Mara did not know Caleb hated onions.
Caleb did not know loud alarms triggered her memories of the boat attack.
Elias kept trying to mediate every silence until both asked him to stop.
One evening, Caleb placed the orange whistle on the table.
“Why did you leave this?”
Mara had given it to Elias before confronting Grant twelve years earlier.
The whistle contained a tracker because she wanted Elias to find her if she failed to return.
Grant discovered the frequency and used it to follow him instead.
“I thought I built a safety device,” Mara said. “I built a door into our lives.”
“Why didn’t you come back after you remembered?”
“I was afraid they would hurt you.”
Caleb looked at her.
“They hurt me anyway.”
“Yes.”
She did not defend herself.
“I am sorry I decided for you.”
Caleb pushed the whistle across the table.
“Keep it.”
Mara shook her head.
“No more trackers.”
They removed the chip together.
Elias repaired the cracked orange casing but left the scar visible.
Mara hung the whistle near the workshop door.
