The Harbor Goes Dark

Chapter 09 - The Harbor Goes Dark

At 4:30 p.m., Grayhaven’s channel lights switched off.

Fishing boats returning ahead of the storm lost the marked route. Two ferries stopped outside the breakwater. A medical transport vessel reported steering interference.

Grant had activated the lighthouse network remotely.

Nathan took command from the rescue station.

He could restore the digital beacons only by using Grant’s executive code. Grant had changed it.

Elias proposed an older solution.

“Light the manual markers.”

The harbor still stored kerosene lamps used before automation. Volunteers carried them to every dock point.

Mara used the mechanical tide clock to calculate the safe channel.

Caleb and the junior cadets painted reflective arrows on the wet boards.

Nathan transmitted instructions by radio.

For the first time, the harbor operated without Grant’s system.

The fishing fleet entered safely.

Then Rescue Boat Three sent a distress call.

Paul Danner had escaped county transport during the confusion. He took the boat and headed toward the eastern channel carrying Grant.

Their destination was the sealed dumping site.

Mara understood.

“They’re going to rupture the drums.”

If solvents entered the bay during the storm, Grant could blame infrastructure failure, force permanent closure, and destroy environmental evidence beneath the contamination.

Nathan, Elias, and Mara boarded the oldest functioning rescue boat.

Caleb tried to join them.

Elias refused.

“You stay at the station.”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“Everyone keeps telling me safety means I don’t get a choice.”

Mara heard her own history in the sentence.

She knelt.

“The water will be dangerous. I am asking, not ordering. Will you help us more by tracking the mechanical beacons here?”

Caleb looked at the map.

“Yes.”

It was the first time protection arrived as a question.

The rescue boat entered the storm.

Behind them, Caleb watched the clock.

12:07 had become more than a timestamp.

It was the point where lies entered every record.

He reset the clock to the correct time.

The second hand began moving again.
