The Whistle Ceremony

Chapter 18 - The Whistle Ceremony

Grayhaven ended the tradition of a single rescue captain’s whistle.

Instead, every certified team member received one.

The sound no longer represented rank.

It meant anyone could stop an operation if something looked unsafe.

At the first ceremony, Elias stood beside the cadets.

Nathan handed him a new orange whistle.

Elias did not take it immediately.

“You tore the last one off me.”

“I know.”

“Apology does not edit the video.”

“I know.”

Nathan held the whistle steady.

“I believed authority required a public sacrifice. I chose you because my father already taught everyone to doubt you.”

Elias accepted the whistle.

“I forgive you enough to work beside you.”

Nathan nodded.

It was not complete absolution.

It was honest ground.

Caleb received his junior safety whistle next.

Mara attached it to a plain breakaway cord with no tracker.

“Checked twice,” she said.

Caleb checked it a third time.

The family laughed.

Fear had not disappeared.

It had become discussable.
