Grant Mercer’s Trial

Chapter 14 - Grant Mercer’s Trial
Grant faced charges involving sabotage, environmental fraud, attempted evidence destruction, conspiracy, and Mara’s disappearance.
The prosecution could not prove he intended to kill her.
It proved he ordered Paul to intercept the boat and recover the files at any cost.
Paul testified.
He described years of altering cameras, clocks, and rescue logs.
Grant’s attorneys presented charitable donations, harbor jobs, and waterfront improvements.
They called him a builder whose methods became too aggressive.
Elias testified that construction was not the opposite of destruction.
“You can build something using the pieces of people you broke.”
Nathan testified last.
Grant watched his son from the defense table.
“Did I ever tell you to injure Mia Torres?” the attorney asked.
“No.”
“Did I personally replace the flare?”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
Nathan looked at Grant.
“Because he taught everyone around him to understand what he wanted without making him say it.”
The jury convicted Grant on most counts.
At sentencing, he addressed Nathan.
“This harbor will forget you when the cameras leave.”
Nathan replied quietly.
“That may be healthy.”
Grant received a sentence that would keep him imprisoned for decades.
Paul received reduced time for cooperation.
Several commissioners and developers were charged separately.
Grayhaven removed the Mercer name from the new marina project.
Nathan opposed replacing it with Reed.
