The Key That Should Have Been Destroyed

Chapter 02 - The Key That Should Have Been Destroyed

Security locked the showroom doors.

Vanessa demanded that Malik be searched.

Julian Grant refused.

“The key is registered to the Carter Trust.”

“My father controls the trust.”

“Your father administers it. That is not the same thing.”

Malik stood beside the Bugatti while guests whispered around him.

Ten years earlier, Aisha Carter had been Sterling Crown’s chief vehicle architect. She designed the adaptive engine system that made the company famous. Her final prototype, the Obsidian, disappeared after her death.

The black Bugatti displayed that evening carried Aisha’s hidden control system beneath its factory body.

Julian explained that the vehicle had remained locked since the night of the accident.

No technician, executive, or collector could start it.

The biometric key responded only to Aisha or her legal heir.

Vanessa looked at Malik.

“You could have stolen her DNA.”

Malik frowned.

“I don’t know how to steal DNA.”

A few guests lowered their phones.

The boy’s simplicity made Vanessa’s accusation sound uglier than she intended.

Julian led Malik to the private lounge.

Vanessa followed.

The key projected an encrypted message onto the wall.

Aisha appeared seated inside the prototype workshop.

“If Malik is watching this, then the Sterling board failed to destroy the inheritance lock.”

Malik stopped breathing.

He had seen photographs of his mother, but he had never heard her voice.

Aisha explained that she placed fifty-one percent of Sterling Crown’s voting rights into a trust for her son. The shares would remain dormant until Malik reached twelve and activated the Obsidian key.

Malik had turned twelve that morning.

The charity gala was also a board celebration marking the planned sale of the company to Helix Automotive.

The sale required the supposedly dormant Carter shares.

Malik’s arrival froze the transaction.

Vanessa looked toward Julian.

“My father said Aisha sold her ownership before the crash.”

“The sale document was signed two hours after she died,” Julian replied.

The room became quiet.

Malik stared at the blue key.

His grandmother had given it to him before dawn with a bus ticket and one instruction:

Go to the black car. Do not give the key to anyone named Sterling.

He had thought she was telling another family story.

Now the company’s most powerful woman stood several feet away wearing that forbidden name.
