The Engine That Remembered

Chapter 05 - The Engine That Remembered
Julian escorted Malik to the driver’s side.
The Bugatti’s door opened upward.
Malik hesitated.
The seat was shaped for an adult. The controls looked more like an aircraft than a car.
“I don’t know how to drive.”
“You do not need to,” Julian said. “The car only needs to know you are here.”
Malik sat down.
The steering wheel scanned his fingerprints.
A soft pulse of blue light crossed his face.
The dashboard displayed:
CARTER HEIR VERIFIED.
He placed the key into the center slot.
The engine awakened with a low mechanical thunder.
Guests stepped backward.
The showroom screens changed.
Aisha’s final test drive appeared from multiple camera angles.
She drove the Obsidian prototype at Sterling Crown’s private track while speaking to Julian over the radio.
“The brake pressure is dropping.”
Julian’s recorded voice replied, “Return to the garage.”
A second voice entered the channel.
Adrian Sterling.
“Complete one more lap. Investors are watching.”
Aisha refused.
The pit-lane gate closed in front of her.
The car accelerated toward the safety barrier.
Then something unexpected happened.
Aisha activated an emergency autonomous system and stopped before impact.
She survived the supposed crash.
The video continued.
Adrian and two security officers opened the car.
Aisha climbed out.
She held a data drive and accused him of stealing her patents and moving company profits into shell accounts.
Adrian ordered the cameras disabled.
One hidden camera remained active.
It recorded Aisha being placed inside a black van.
The official crash was staged later using another vehicle and falsified remains.
Malik watched his mother disappear into the van.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked at her father.
“She did not die on the track.”
Adrian said nothing.
The final screen showed coordinates and a date from six months earlier.

Aisha had transmitted a signal from somewhere called Northpoint Research Center.
She might still be alive.
