Ten years after the wedding, Laura entered the ballroom for the first time since her disappearance.
The circular table occupied the former platform.
Employees were debating a hotel-conversion project.
No one stood when Laura entered.
She had requested that.
Emily walked beside her.
Laura looked up at the chandelier cameras.
“I designed the original wiring,” she said.
“Did you imagine this?”
“I imagined Arthur and me keeping each other honest.”
“That didn’t happen.”
“No.”
Laura touched the edge of the circular table.
“Systems should not depend on founders being good forever.”
She proposed an independent patient-and-worker fund for employees trapped in guardianship or coercive financial situations.
The board approved after revisions.
Laura’s idea changed through public discussion.
She considered that healthier than automatic obedience.
