The Empty Cottage at Briarwood

Chapter 06 - The Empty Cottage at Briarwood

State investigators entered Briarwood Recovery Center before midnight.

Patient L-24’s cottage was empty.

Her bed remained warm.

A nurse named Rachel Stone admitted that Vivian ordered the transfer during the wedding ceremony.

Rachel had cared for Laura for eight years.

She believed Laura’s family wanted privacy, but recent conversations made her suspicious.

Laura remembered Emily.

She collected newspaper clippings about the wedding.

She asked repeatedly to attend.

Briarwood administrators told her Emily wanted no contact.

Rachel began copying records.

The night before the wedding, Laura gave her a folded map showing a lake house owned by Hartwell Hotels.

“She said they would take her there if Vivian became frightened,” Rachel explained.

Police reached the lake house at dawn.

The upper rooms were empty.

A locked medical suite stood beneath the boathouse.

Laura sat near a window overlooking the water.

She wore a pale blue cardigan and held one of Emily’s engagement photographs.

Emily entered only after an independent doctor confirmed it was safe.

Laura looked at the wedding dress.

“You came from the ballroom.”

Emily nodded.

“I’m your daughter.”

Laura touched her face.

“I know.”

For twenty-four years, Vivian’s doctors controlled Laura’s medication, visitors, mail, and legal identity.

She had been told Emily believed her dead.

Emily had been told Laura died in the marina fire.

Mother and daughter held each other while cameras remained outside.

The reunion belonged to them.

Julian waited at the edge of the property.

Emily did not invite him in.
