Vivian’s First Defense

Chapter 07 - Vivian’s First Defense
Vivian Hartwell held a press conference from the family estate.
She described Laura as a fragile woman whose private treatment had protected her dignity.
She claimed Emily manipulated a wedding dispute to seize Hartwell Hotels.
Edited footage showed Emily standing calmly after the ceremony.
It did not show Julian pulling away the veil or seating Celeste in the founder’s chair.
Vivian’s message was simple:
A true victim would have remained broken.
Emily released no medical details.
Instead, Ortiz published the guardianship orders, payment records, and unedited ballroom footage.
The public watched Vivian clap while Emily sat on the floor.
They heard Julian call her a fraud.
They saw the chair open.
The narrative changed.
Hartwell employees began sending records to investigators.
A banquet manager preserved invoices showing pension money paying for private family events.
A housekeeper kept photographs of files removed from Laura’s old office.
An accountant saved emails directing him to classify Briarwood payments as retired-worker benefits.
The truth had existed in fragments across the company.
The wedding connected them.
Vivian’s attorneys offered Emily a settlement.
The family would recognize her shares, provide Laura lifelong care, and apologize privately if Emily withdrew criminal support.
Emily refused.
“My mother’s freedom is not a benefit you can provide. It is something you took.”
Vivian’s first defense collapsed.

Her second was more dangerous.
She threatened to close hotels and blame Emily for every lost job.
