The Photograph Dated Six Months Earlier

Chapter 04 - The Photograph Dated Six Months Earlier

The photograph showed a silver-haired woman standing beside the greenhouse of Briarwood Recovery Center.

On the back, Arthur had written:

LAURA LIVES. VIVIAN CONTROLS THE RECORD.

The photograph was dated only six months earlier.

Emily’s hands began to shake.

“My mother would be sixty-two.”

Samuel Price nodded.

“Arthur learned she survived the marina fire shortly before his death. He believed Vivian had placed her under a false medical guardianship.”

Vivian called the photograph fabricated.

Ortiz asked why Briarwood had received monthly payments from Hartwell Family Services for twenty-three years.

The ballroom screens displayed the transfers.

Each payment carried Vivian’s approval code.

Julian looked at his mother.

“You told me Briarwood housed retired employees.”

“It does.”

“Is Laura Rhodes there?”

Vivian’s silence answered.

Emily wanted to leave immediately.

Ortiz stopped her gently.

“If Laura is under private guardianship, we need a warrant and medical advocates. Going there without legal protection could allow them to move her.”

Emily understood.

Powerful families survived by turning urgent emotion into procedural mistakes.

She would not give Vivian that advantage.

Briarwood’s public records listed no Laura Rhodes.

Patient L-24 occupied a private cottage funded by Hartwell Family Services.

At 8:31, a security alert showed a vehicle leaving Briarwood.

Vivian had triggered a transfer from her phone beneath the wedding table.

Ortiz ordered state police to stop the vehicle.

It was found twenty miles north.

The passenger seat was empty.

The rear compartment contained medication, a folded shawl, and another photograph.

This one showed Laura standing outside the Hartwell Grand ballroom years earlier.

She held infant Emily.
