The Father And The Son

Chapter 11 - The Father And The Son
Charles took Preston into the private library off the ballroom.
No guests. No chandeliers. No tablet raised overhead. Just shelves of leather-bound books, a marble fireplace, and a father facing the man his son had become.
Preston paced once, then stopped.
“You humiliated me.”
Charles stared at him.
The sentence was so absurd it almost made him laugh.
“No, Preston. You humiliated a child. I stopped pretending not to see it.”
Preston’s eyes hardened. “You’re going to destroy me over some event planner’s daughter?”
There it was again. Some. A word Preston used when he needed people smaller.
Charles felt something inside him close.
“Her name is Ivy.”
Preston rolled his eyes.
That tiny movement ended several decades of excuses.
Charles stepped closer. “You will issue an apology to Grace and Ivy. You will leave the foundation board. You will enter treatment for your anger and substance abuse, and you will do it without a press statement turning yourself into a victim.”
Preston stared.
“You can’t force me.”
“No. But I can stop funding the illusion that you are fit for leadership.”
Preston’s confidence flickered.
Money. Finally, a language he respected.
“You’d cut me off?”
“I should have corrected you before money became your last remaining conscience.”
Preston’s mouth twisted.
“She’s not family.”
Charles thought of Ivy’s tears. Grace’s body shielding her. Evelyn’s apology. Daniel’s raised tablet. The white gift box on the floor.
“No,” he said. “But tonight she told the truth about ours.”

Preston looked at the door like a boy looking for his mother.
This time, no one came to rescue him from what he had done.
