Evelyn’s Apology

Chapter 12 - Evelyn’s Apology

Evelyn found Grace in the cloakroom.

Grace was kneeling before Ivy, wiping the child’s cheeks with a tissue. The gold satin gown pooled around her on the carpet. Ivy’s mint-green dress was wrinkled where she had clutched it, but the little girl was calmer now, hiccupping through the last waves of fear.

Evelyn stopped at the doorway.

“May I come in?”

Grace looked over her shoulder. Her face made no promise of politeness.

“Why?”

Evelyn accepted the question. “To apologize without an audience.”

Grace hesitated, then stood. She did not move away from Ivy.

Evelyn entered slowly, hands folded. Without chandeliers and guests around her, she looked less like a matriarch and more like a woman standing under the weight of every excuse she had ever made.

“I have protected my son from consequences,” Evelyn said. “Tonight your daughter paid for part of that. I am sorry.”

Grace studied her.

“Why tonight?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled. “Because tonight there was footage.”

The honesty was ugly.

Grace respected it more than any polished answer.

Evelyn looked at Ivy. “I should not have needed a camera to believe a frightened child.”

Ivy held Grace’s hand.

“Is he in trouble?” she asked.

Evelyn swallowed.

“Yes.”

Ivy considered that. “Will he be mean to someone else?”

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

“I am going to try very hard to stop that.”

Grace’s voice cooled. “Try harder than you tried before.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I will.”

It was not forgiveness.

It was a beginning under supervision.

Grace picked up Ivy’s coat.

“We’re going home.”

May you like

Evelyn stepped aside.

For once, she did not block the exit with apology.
