Preston Watches The Footage

Chapter 17 - Preston Watches The Footage
Preston watched the footage alone six months later.
His therapist had suggested it. Charles had refused to send a copy until Grace agreed, and Grace agreed only after Daniel blurred Ivy further and removed anything that felt exploitative. No readable text. No angles that lingered on her fear. Just enough truth for Preston to confront himself.
He sat in a private room with the tablet on a table.
At first, he watched like a defendant searching for technicalities.
The box was too close to the edge.
The child was near it.
He was under stress.
The room misunderstood.
Then the clip replayed.
His shoulder hit the table.
Ivy stepped back.
He turned.
He pointed.
She cried.
Grace ran.
He lied.
Again.
Shoulder. Box. Child. Point. Tears. Lie.
By the fifth viewing, Preston stopped looking for context.
By the seventh, he saw her size.
That was what broke through first. Ivy was so small. He had remembered her as an accusation, an obstacle, a source of embarrassment. The footage showed a child in ruffles trying to disappear into her own hands.
Preston paused the video before Grace reached her.
His breathing shook.
For the first time, shame arrived without an audience.
No father to challenge.
No mother to manipulate.
No guests to control.
No room to win.
Just a man in a black tuxedo on a small screen, using power against a child.
He covered his face.
It was not redemption.
May you like
Not yet.
But denial finally had nowhere comfortable to sit.
