Grace’s Line

Chapter 08 - Grace’s Line

Grace Moore had taken the gala job because rent did not care about pride.

She coordinated flowers, musicians, guest lists, catering routes, emergency stain kits, seating charts, and the fragile egos of people who confused money with weather. She wore the gold gown because Evelyn Vale requested elegance from senior staff “for visual harmony.” Grace understood the translation: look beautiful enough to decorate the room, but not important enough to interrupt it.

Then Preston pointed at Ivy.

Every compromise Grace had made for survival burned away.

Now she sat on the marble floor in satin, one arm around her daughter, looking up at a billionaire family finally realizing their son was dangerous in public.

Charles turned to her.

“Ms. Moore—”

Grace cut him off.

“My daughter’s name is Ivy.”

Charles stopped.

Good.

Grace continued, voice shaking but controlled. “She is seven. She was admiring a box. Your son scared her, blamed her, and counted on everyone in this room to protect him because that is what rooms like this do.”

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Grace looked at them too.

“You all saw enough to wonder. None of you moved until the tablet came up.”

Silence.

Ivy pressed her face into Grace’s shoulder.

Grace softened immediately, kissing her hair.

“I’m not asking for a scene,” Grace said. “I’m asking for space to take my child home.”

Charles looked as if he had been struck.

“Of course.”

Preston scoffed. “This is ridiculous.”

Grace looked back at him.

“No,” she said. “What’s ridiculous is that a grown man in a tuxedo needs security footage to stop lying about a child.”

The sentence landed cleanly.

Preston recoiled as if dignity itself had slapped him.

Charles closed his eyes.

Because Grace had named the truth more precisely than his money ever could.
