Ivy’s Box

Chapter 18 - Ivy’s Box
For Ivy’s eighth birthday, Grace gave her a white gift box.
It was not the same one. Grace would never bring that object into their home. This box was smaller, wrapped with mint ribbon, placed on the kitchen table beside pancakes with too many blueberries.
Ivy stared at it.
Grace held her breath.
“You don’t have to open it.”
Ivy touched the ribbon.
“What if I drop it?”
“Then we pick it up.”
“What if it breaks?”
“Then we decide if it can be fixed.”
“What if someone says I did it on purpose?”
Grace sat beside her.
“Then I will ask what really happened before I believe the loudest person.”
Ivy nodded slowly.
Then she opened the box.
Inside was a tiny gold necklace shaped like a shield. Simple. Not expensive. Chosen because Ivy had once asked if brave people were brave all the time and Grace told her shields could shake and still protect.
Ivy touched it.
“It’s pretty.”
“It’s yours.”
Ivy looked at the empty box, then gently pushed it off the table.
Grace’s eyes widened.
The box landed on the rug.
Ivy looked at it.
Then at Grace.
“I did that one,” she said.
Grace laughed so hard she cried.
Ivy laughed too.
Not because the memory was gone.
May you like
Because she had made a new one on purpose.
Later, Grace placed the empty box on a shelf in Ivy’s room. No label. No explanation. Just a small white box that belonged to the child, not the man who once tried to make it evidence against her.
