Preston Loses The Room

Chapter 07 - Preston Loses The Room

Preston had always been good at rooms.

He knew where to stand so chandeliers sharpened his face. He knew how to insult people with enough humor that victims looked sensitive if they complained. He knew which guests would laugh, which would look away, which would later say he had only been joking.

But this room had slipped from him.

The circle of guests no longer bent toward his confidence. They watched him as if seeing a stranger wearing a familiar tuxedo. No one rushed to reassure him. No one offered a softer explanation. Even his mother stood apart, one hand at her throat, eyes wet with recognition he did not want.

Preston pointed toward Daniel Brooks and the tablet.

“That footage is out of context.”

Daniel did not speak.

Charles did.

“Then explain the context.”

Preston’s mouth opened.

He had explanations for emotions, not evidence.

“She was too close to the table.”

“She did not touch it.”

“She startled me.”

“She was standing still.”

“You’re choosing her over me?”

There it was.

The oldest tactic. Make accountability sound like betrayal.

Charles’s face tightened.

“I am choosing the truth over what you have made us protect.”

Preston’s eyes flashed.

Grace felt Ivy tremble at the anger in his voice, and her arm tightened around the child. The protective woman did not stand. She did not need height to be immovable.

Preston looked at Ivy again.

For the first time, she did not look away immediately.

She was still crying. Still frightened. But she had seen the tablet. She had heard adults say the camera saw him. She had heard Evelyn apologize.

Being believed did not erase fear.

But it gave fear somewhere to stand.

Preston saw that too.

And hated it.
