The Tablet Rises

Chapter 04 - The Tablet Rises

The tablet belonged to Daniel Brooks, the ballroom’s security coordinator.

He had been standing near the back wall since the gala began, headset tucked discreetly beneath his collar, eyes moving between entrances, staff routes, and the Vale family. Daniel was not a guest. Men like him were paid to observe but not participate, to notice trouble but never become the story.

That night, he had noticed Preston early.

Preston was the kind of man security teams learn to track without saying why. Too close to servers. Too sharp with staff. Too comfortable turning other people’s embarrassment into entertainment. Daniel had seen him knock into the gift table. He had seen the white box fall.

He had also seen Ivy blamed.

For three seconds, Daniel did what employees often do around powerful families.

He hesitated.

Then Ivy cried.

That changed the cost of silence.

Daniel stepped into the circle and raised a black tablet. The screen showed blurred security-camera footage from the ballroom. No readable text. No timestamp. No interface. Just grainy, elevated video: the same marble floor, the same gift table, the same white box, Preston’s shoulder striking the table, Ivy stepping back untouched.

The room stopped breathing.

Grace looked up.

Ivy, still crying against her mother’s gold gown, turned her wet face toward the tablet.

For the first time since the accusation, an adult object in the room told the truth.

Charles Vale saw it.

His face changed slowly, terribly. First doubt left. Then confusion. Then the old habit of protecting Preston tried to rise and failed against the footage.

Evelyn covered her mouth near the staircase.

Preston stared at the tablet.

“That’s not—”

He stopped.

Because it was.

Daniel held the tablet steady long enough for every guest to understand. Nobody tapped. Nobody scrolled. Nobody added drama. The evidence did what truth does when people stop burying it.

It stood still.

Charles stepped forward.

May you like

“The camera saw you,” he said.

Preston’s arrogance cracked.
