Grace Returns

Chapter 15 - Grace Returns
Grace returned to the mansion three days later to collect her final payment and resign.
She wore slacks, a cream sweater, and no gold satin. Ivy stayed with a neighbor. Grace refused to bring her daughter back into a house that had learned morality only after video evidence.
Charles met her in the foyer, not the ballroom.
No chandeliers. No guests. No circle.
“Ms. Moore,” he said.
“Grace.”
He nodded. “Grace.”
He handed her an envelope. No readable text. “Payment in full, plus the cancellation fee for future events we had booked through your company.”
“I am canceling those.”
“I know.”
Grace looked at the envelope but did not take it yet.
“This is not hush money.”
“No.”
“Good.”
Charles held it steady. “It is money owed. Nothing more.”
She accepted.
Then he added, “I would also like to fund a child safety protocol for every foundation event. Designed by someone outside this family. Paid consulting. Your terms.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed. “Because you feel guilty?”
“Yes.”
“At least you’re honest.”
“I am learning late.”
Grace looked toward the ballroom doors. She could almost see the circle, the gift box, Ivy’s face, Preston’s finger.
“My daughter asked if people believed her because of the tablet,” she said.
Charles closed his eyes.
“I am sorry.”
“Stop saying sorry and build rooms where children don’t need footage.”
He nodded.
Grace turned to leave.
At the door, she paused.
“And Mr. Vale?”
“Yes?”
“Do not make my daughter the symbol of your redemption.”
Charles’s face tightened.
“I won’t.”
May you like
Grace hoped that was true.
But she would be watching.
