Chapter 03 - Grace Moves First

Grace Moore crossed the ballroom before she realized she was running.

Not fast enough to look wild. Not slow enough to be polite. Her gold satin gown moved around her legs as she pushed through the stunned ring of black-tie guests. The chandeliers blurred above her. All she saw was Ivy backing away from Preston Vale.

Preston leaned down toward the child, finger pointed, tuxedo perfect, face ugly with anger.

“She ruined everything,” he said.

The words were meant for the room, not the girl. Grace understood that immediately. Preston was not explaining. He was assigning guilt before anyone could ask questions.

Ivy began to cry.

That sound cut through every rule Grace had been hired to follow.

She dropped beside her daughter and pulled Ivy into both arms. One arm wrapped around the child’s shoulders, the other around her waist, holding her close enough that Ivy’s trembling became Grace’s too.

“Don’t you dare blame her,” Grace said.

Preston straightened, offended by the interruption.

“Excuse me?”

Grace looked up at him. Her dark hair had loosened from its polished style. Her eyes were wet but fierce.

“You heard me.”

The guests shifted. A woman in diamonds looked toward Evelyn on the staircase. Evelyn’s face had gone pale, but she did not move. Charles stood opposite Preston, watching with confusion hardening into concern.

Preston pointed again.

“She was standing right there. Ask anyone.”

No one answered.

That silence told Grace everything about the room. People had seen enough to suspect the truth and not enough courage to say it. The white gift box and lid remained on the marble floor near Ivy, exactly where they had fallen. Evidence in plain sight, waiting for an adult with a spine.

Ivy clutched Grace’s gown.

“I didn’t, Mom,” she whispered.

Grace pressed her cheek to Ivy’s hair.

“I know.”

Preston laughed coldly.

“Of course you do. She’s your kid.”

Then, from somewhere inside the silent circle, a black tablet rose above the crowd.
