The School Emails

Chapter 04 - The School Emails

Lily’s school principal sent Adrian a folder of unanswered messages.

Teachers had reported that Lily arrived without lunch, fell asleep during reading, and asked whether children could be expelled for “making adults tired.”

Each email received a reply from Adrian’s personal account.

Thank you. We are addressing this privately.

Adrian had never written them.

Serena knew his password.

A counselor requested a meeting after Lily drew a picture of a locked refrigerator.

The meeting was canceled through Adrian’s calendar.

A note in Lily’s record said the child was receiving private behavioral therapy.

No therapist’s license number appeared.

The provider was Northway Family Institute, a company connected to Victor Shaw.

Detective Ortiz traced the payments.

Bright Table Foundation had paid Northway more than three million dollars for “nutrition-related family intervention.”

The institute had no licensed staff and no physical office.

It existed to move charity money.

Lily’s false therapy notes described food refusal, manipulation, and compulsive lying.

Those notes supported the guardianship petition.

Serena had turned the evidence of hunger into proof that the child caused it.

Adrian met Lily’s counselor at the school after hours.

The woman showed him a sealed envelope Lily had asked her to mail.

It was addressed to Adrian’s office.

Inside was a drawing of the pantry.

At the bottom, Lily had written:

DAD, PLEASE COME HOME BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY.

The office had returned the envelope unopened because Serena instructed staff to redirect all personal mail.

Adrian held the paper for a long time.

“I want to say I didn’t know.”

The counselor answered gently.

“Lily needs to know what you will do now.”

Regret could center the adult.

Repair had to center the child.

Adrian canceled every nonessential trip for the next six months and appointed an independent child advocate before the court required one.

He would not ask Lily to trust a promise.

He would build a schedule she could watch him keep.
