The Smart Feeder Testifies

Chapter 09 - The Smart Feeder Testifies
At Serena’s preliminary hearing, her attorneys challenged the feeder recording.
They argued that pet devices were unreliable and could be edited.
The manufacturer produced encrypted cloud logs showing every file’s original timestamp.
The device had uploaded automatically to a server outside Serena’s control.
Technicians confirmed no alteration.
The court heard Serena’s voice:
“You can eat what’s in the bowl or wait until tomorrow.”
It heard Victor discuss the guardianship deadline.
It heard Lily ask whether her father knew.
Serena answered:
“He knows you make everything difficult.”
The statement hurt Adrian more than any accusation against him.
Serena had used his absence as authority.
She did not need to prove he agreed.
She only needed Lily to believe he might.
The feeder also recorded house staff entering the pantry and saying nothing.
Some claimed Serena threatened their jobs.
Others said they believed Lily was following a medically approved plan.
One cook had hidden fruit in Lily’s backpack.
A housekeeper reported concerns to Victor, who told her the child was receiving treatment.
The system survived through fear, misinformation, and people assuming someone else understood the whole story.
The court preserved the feeder as evidence.
Max stayed with Lily.
