Midnight at the Courthouse

Chapter 07 - Midnight at the Courthouse

At 10:45 p.m., Victor’s guardianship attorneys appeared before an emergency judge.

They claimed Adrian had removed Lily from Serena’s care, interfered with treatment, and manipulated video footage.

Ortiz presented the unedited feeder recordings.

The school emails.

The false therapy company.

The photograph of Olivia.

The judge asked where Serena was.

She had vanished from the mansion during the confusion.

Airport cameras showed her entering a charter terminal with two suitcases and a folder marked BRIGHT TABLE — TRUST.

State police stopped the aircraft before departure.

The folder contained the original trust charter and a prewritten order placing Lily under Serena’s guardianship.

The judge’s signature line was blank.

Victor expected it to be filled after the hearing.

At 11:52 p.m., the court denied the guardianship petition and froze every Bright Table account.

The judge appointed an independent temporary advocate for Lily and ordered that no parent, stepparent, attorney, or family employee control the trust alone.

At midnight, the public-benefit provision activated.

Lily’s shares transferred to an interim board of teachers, school nutrition workers, parents, and independent financial experts.

Serena and Victor lost the asset they had built the entire scheme to control.

Lily slept through the transfer.

Adrian sat beside her hospital bed.

At 12:07, she woke briefly.

“Did I miss my birthday?”

He looked at the paper crown a nurse had placed on the table.

“No. We’re starting it again tomorrow.”

A birthday was not a deadline.

It was a day a child deserved to remember without lawyers.
