Chapter 12 - Nora and Lucas
Nora did not return home after leaving the hospital.
She chose a secure apartment near her obstetrician.
Lucas moved into a hotel.
They began separate therapy before discussing the marriage.
Lucas apologized.
Nora stopped him when the apology became an explanation.
“My mother manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid you planned to take the company.”
“Yes.”
“I never wanted her to hurt you.”
“I know.”
None of those statements answered the central failure.
Nora said it plainly.
“I told you I was afraid of her, and you asked me to be more reasonable.”
Lucas looked down.
He had loved his wife.
He had also required her fear to arrive in a form that did not inconvenience him.
