Celeste raised Lucas after his father died during a construction accident.
She preserved the family business through debt, layoffs, and years of litigation. Lucas grew up believing his mother had saved everything.
In many ways, she had.
That history became her permanent argument for control.
When Lucas married Nora, Celeste welcomed her publicly. Privately, she described Nora’s patent trust as an insult.
“Your wife can remove everything the moment she becomes unhappy,” she told Lucas.
The statement was false. The licenses contained strict protections for employees and creditors.
Lucas never verified it.
Celeste understood that fear of dependence was his weakest point.
Every time Nora requested an audit, Celeste translated it as distrust.
Every time Nora defended her shares, Celeste called it preparation for divorce.
Lucas began seeing ordinary governance as a threat to marriage.
