Maisie Chooses Her Name

Chapter 10 - Maisie Chooses Her Name
DNA testing confirmed Claire was Maisie’s mother and Adrian her biological uncle.
The court corrected Maisie’s records.
She had lived under four surnames.
Claire asked which one she wanted.
Maisie chose Maisie Claire Reed-Cole.
Reed honored Rosa, who used the name while protecting them.
Cole connected her to Claire and Adrian.
She did not use Hale.
The judge sealed the false identities without deleting them entirely.
Those years had happened.
A corrected record should not pretend that the child’s life began only when a wealthy family recognized her.
Maisie chose to live with Claire in a small apartment near her school.
Adrian offered the Cole estate.
They declined.
He requested regular visits through the advocate.
Maisie agreed to one afternoon each week.
The first visit took place at a public photography studio.
Adrian brought no expensive gift.
They developed pictures together.
Maisie asked why he stopped searching for Claire.
“I believed the people who made the answer easier.”
“Was it easier?”
“No.”
“Then why believe them?”
Adrian had no answer that improved the truth.
“I was wrong.”
Maisie returned to the enlarger.
“Next week, I’ll show you how Mom taught me to print stars.”

The invitation was small.
Adrian treated it as enough.
