Vivienne’s Letter

Chapter 18 - Vivienne’s Letter

Five years into her sentence, Vivienne wrote to Maisie through a court-approved restorative program.

Her first draft blamed Evelyn.

The program did not forward it.

The second named her choices.

She admitted knowing Claire was alive.

She admitted believing that one child’s identity was a manageable price for the marriage and foundation merger.

She wrote:

When I saw you with the camera, I did not see a frightened child. I saw the end of the life I wanted.

Maisie read the letter at fourteen with a counselor.

She remembered Vivienne’s hand reaching toward the strap.

She replied:

You know what you chose. That matters. It does not give you access to me.

Vivienne later provided passwords that recovered additional files.

The records helped families.
