Hale House

Chapter 06 - Hale House

Hale House stood on a wooded estate outside Boston.

The public knew it as a private retreat for exhausted executives and wealthy families.

Its lower level contained a medical wing absent from public plans.

Ortiz obtained a warrant using Rosa’s transfer logs and Claire’s photographs.

Investigators entered with independent physicians, patient advocates, and state inspectors.

Claire occupied Room Seventeen under the name Caroline Reed.

She was alive, alert, and receiving medication she had repeatedly refused.

A guardianship order described her as paranoid and obsessed with the Hale family.

Dr. Mercer signed it.

Evelyn Hale approved the facility’s legal petition.

Claire had been allowed no independent attorney.

She had spent six months asking where Maisie was.

Staff told her Maisie had been placed with a stable family and no longer wanted contact.

When Ortiz explained that Maisie reached Adrian, Claire covered her face.

Their reunion took place in a hospital garden.

Maisie stopped at the path’s entrance.

Claire opened both hands.

Maisie ran toward her.

Adrian watched from behind a window.

He wanted to enter immediately.

The advocate asked him to wait.

Brotherhood and unclehood did not place him inside the first moment Claire and Maisie had chosen together.

Later, Claire agreed to see him.

Adrian entered slowly.

Claire studied his wedding tuxedo.

“You almost married her.”

“Yes.”

“I sent warnings.”

“I never received them.”

“You received enough strange things to ask more questions.”

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.”

Claire did not forgive him that afternoon.

Survival did not require immediate reconciliation.
