The Trust Hearing

Chapter 10 - The Trust Hearing
The state court held an emergency hearing to establish Sophie’s identity and protect the Holloway Trust.
Vanessa’s attorneys argued that Mara’s years under guardianship made her testimony unreliable.
Independent doctors confirmed Mara understood her choices.
DNA testing established that Sophie was her daughter and Adrian’s niece.
The locket photograph, school records, and Mara’s hidden letters completed the timeline.
Judge Evelyn Crowne attempted to remove herself from the case only after investigators discovered her role.
State officials suspended her.
A judge from another county presided.
The original trust offered two paths.
Sophie’s account could remain private under Mara and Adrian’s joint control.
Or the shares could transfer into a permanent child-and-worker foundation, giving Sophie personal security but preventing any relative from controlling the charitable network through her.
Adrian expected Mara to keep the private trust.
She chose the foundation.
“I spent six years watching adults treat my daughter’s identity like a key,” she said. “She should not grow up believing her blood gives her ownership of other children’s lives.”
Adrian supported the decision.
The new board included former foster youth, shelter workers, teachers, hotel employees, child advocates, and financial experts.
Sophie would receive education, healthcare, and housing security.

At sixteen, she could apply for a youth seat like any other young person.
No marriage, guardian, or family merger could control the shares again.
