Adrian’s Apology

Chapter 18 - Adrian’s Apology
Five years after the failed wedding, Adrian asked Mara and Sophie to meet him in the North Archive.
He had completed the restitution review.
The hotel company returned funds taken through false foster contracts.
Employees gained board seats.
Adrian sold his private aircraft and several luxury properties to cover remaining losses.
He did not present the actions as sacrifice.
They were repayment.
In the archive, he apologized to Mara again.
This time, he named specific failures.
He ignored her audit.
He accepted Vanessa’s diagnosis of her behavior.
He stopped searching after the burned car.
He signed a marriage merger without reading its effect on children.
Then he turned to Sophie.
“I let adults use my name to make you believe no one was looking for you.”
Sophie was twelve now.
“You weren’t looking.”
Adrian nodded.
“You’re right.”
The answer mattered.
He did not replace the truth with intention.
Sophie asked whether he would ever marry.
“Maybe.”
“Will I have to be in the wedding?”
“Only if you choose.”
She smiled.
The family left the archive together.
No recording played.

No hidden door opened.
An apology did not need a dramatic mechanism when it no longer hid from facts.
