The Wedding Dress Is Divided

Chapter 17 - The Wedding Dress Is Divided

Vanessa’s wedding dress remained in a preservation box at Holloway Hall.

The court released it after the trial.

The foundation planned to sell it for restitution.

Sophie asked whether it could become something different.

A sewing cooperative for former foster youth proposed dividing the ivory silk into graduation sashes, interview scarves, and keepsake pouches.

Mara approved after confirming no one would use the pieces as public spectacle.

The dress became twenty-seven smaller objects.

One pouch held Sophie’s corrected birth certificate.

Another held a young woman’s first apartment key.

No one wore the full gown again.

The ballroom hosted weddings occasionally, but couples agreed that no child would be used as charity decoration or publicity.

The foundation paid flower girls, musicians, servers, and youth performers fairly.

Sophie attended one ceremony two years later.

She wore a blue dress and kept the locket beneath it.

When another child became nervous before walking down the aisle, Sophie took her hand.
