Brother and Sister

Chapter 07 - Brother and Sister
Adrian waited in a hospital consultation room while independent doctors examined Mara.
He did not enter until she requested him.
When the door opened, Mara looked older than the sister in his memories.
Her dark hair carried silver near the temples. Her posture remained straight.
“You married her?” Mara asked.
“The wedding stopped.”
“That was not my question.”
Adrian sat down.
“I planned to.”
Mara looked toward the window.
“I sent letters.”
“I never received them.”
“You received warnings before I disappeared.”
Adrian remembered.
Mara had called Vanessa dangerous.
She had accused Victor of altering trust files.
Adrian dismissed the claims because Vanessa produced reports describing Mara as exhausted and unstable.
“I believed the people who made the crisis easier for me,” he said.
Mara nodded.
She did not immediately forgive him.
Sophie entered with her advocate.
Mara remained seated and opened both hands.
Sophie ran to her.
They held each other without cameras in the room.
Adrian waited outside.
The reunion did not belong to the Holloway brand, the wedding guests, or the news stations gathered near the hospital.
Hours later, Sophie asked Adrian whether he was truly her uncle.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you find us?”
He could have blamed false records, powerful lawyers, and the burned car.
Instead, he answered honestly.
“I stopped looking too soon.”
Sophie considered him carefully.
“Are you going to stop again?”
“No.”

The promise would not be proven that night.
It would be proven through every ordinary day that followed.
