The Ring Behind the Flowers

Chapter 04 - The Ring Behind the Flowers

Detective Ortiz obtained permission to search the bridal suite.

Vanessa objected, but Adrian owned the venue and the missing ring belonged to his family trust.

The ring was not in the jewelry case.

A florist found it taped beneath the base of a white rose arrangement.

Vanessa said a staff member must have placed it there.

The florist’s delivery camera showed Vanessa entering the room alone.

The ring carried the same crescent-moon symbol as Sophie’s locket.

Adrian inserted it into a hidden lock behind the north-wing library shelves.

A narrow elevator descended beneath Holloway Hall.

The North Archive smelled of paper, cedar, and dust.

Metal cabinets lined the walls.

Mara’s name appeared on one drawer.

Inside were foster-placement ledgers, bank transfers, and recordings from trust meetings.

Mara had copied everything before disappearing.

The ledgers showed that Crowne Family Services invented children on paper, collected public funding, and then moved the money into luxury property developments.

Some real children were given duplicate identities so the agency could bill multiple counties for the same placement.

Sophie’s name appeared beside a protected trust account worth forty-eight million dollars.

The account had been created by Adrian’s grandfather.

A separate letter explained why.

Mara secretly gave birth while investigating the Crowne network. She feared Vanessa’s family would use the child to control the Holloway Trust.

She asked her grandfather to hide Sophie’s identity until the investigation became safe.

The trust would activate when Sophie turned eight.

Her birthday was twelve days away.

If Adrian married Vanessa before Sophie was legally recognized, Vanessa would become co-trustee through the family merger agreement.
