The Shelter Director’s Choice

Chapter 09 - The Shelter Director’s Choice
Paula Grant, director of Starlight House, admitted she had ignored warning signs.
Vanessa donated new beds, school supplies, and a kitchen renovation.
In return, Paula accepted placement orders without questioning why some children had multiple identity numbers.
When Sophie arrived, the file prohibited contact with anyone named Holloway.
Paula found the restriction strange.
She said nothing.
Three days before the wedding, Vanessa asked to inspect Sophie’s belongings.
Paula allowed it.
Vanessa found no locket because Sophie wore it beneath her pajamas.
At the wedding, Vanessa saw the chain and panicked.
Paula could have hidden behind the documents.
Instead, she opened every shelter record to investigators.
The review discovered twelve children whose files had been manipulated.
Some had relatives searching for them.
Others lived safely at Starlight and did not need sudden removal.
Mara insisted the correction process move slowly and listen to each child.
Paula resigned.
She later worked as an assistant under an independent director, accepting less authority while helping repair the records she had trusted too easily.
Sophie asked whether Paula was bad.
Mara answered carefully.
“She made choices that helped harmful people. She is responsible for those choices.”
“Can she become good?”

“She can do better. You do not have to decide what she is.”
Sophie learned that accountability did not require children to simplify adults into perfect heroes or permanent monsters.
