Mara Rebuilds a Life

Chapter 15 - Mara Rebuilds a Life
Mara chose an apartment near Sophie’s school.
She did not move into the Holloway estate.
After years of supervised rooms, she wanted keys no one else controlled.
Her recovery was uneven.
Some mornings, she remembered every detail of the fraud.
Other days, medication changes left her tired and confused.
Independent doctors documented her condition without turning uncertainty into loss of rights.
She returned to accounting gradually.
The foundation offered her an executive position.
She declined.
“I exposed one family controlling the system. I should not become the next family member automatically placed above it.”
Mara joined an elected audit committee for one term.
She helped design safeguards requiring children and parents to receive copies of every identity and placement change.
No file could be sealed from the person named inside it merely because a donor requested privacy.
Sophie began sleeping with the locket beneath her pillow.
Mara worried it carried too much responsibility.
They discussed placing it in a safe.
Sophie said no.
“It was yours, then mine.”
Mara accepted the answer.
The locket remained a family object.
Not a brand.

Not a fundraising symbol.
Not proof Sophie had to show whenever someone questioned who she was.
