Sophie Reads Vanessa’s Letter

Chapter 19 - Sophie Reads Vanessa’s Letter
Vanessa wrote from prison through a court-approved restorative program.
The first letter blamed Evelyn and Victor.
Mara kept it sealed.
The second admitted that Vanessa knew Sophie was Mara’s daughter before the wedding.
She had seen a photograph in Victor’s files.
She arranged the shelter invitation to monitor Sophie and planned the transfer after the ceremony.
Then she saw the locket.
Fear turned the plan into public cruelty.
Vanessa wrote:
I believed one frightened child was a small price for preserving everything I had built.
Sophie read the letter at fourteen with a counselor.
She felt angry that Vanessa called the network something she had built when children’s identities paid for it.
Vanessa asked whether Sophie might someday visit.
Sophie answered:
No. Your honesty matters, but it does not give you access to me.
The response was delivered.
Mara told Sophie she could change her mind later.
She could also never change it.
Freedom included the right to leave a boundary in place.
The locket rested beside Sophie during the session.
She did not open it.
She no longer needed to examine the photograph every time someone discussed her past.
