The Deadline

Chapter 13 - The Deadline

Probate court scheduled Noah’s recognition hearing nine days before his twenty-fifth birthday.

Victoria’s legal team challenged everything.

They questioned the DNA chain.

They called Claire’s recordings coerced.

They claimed Harold’s amendment required personal service to Alexander.

They argued Noah’s application arrived too late because paternity existed from birth but notice did not.

The strategy was not to prove Noah false.

It was to let the clock expire.

Mara Keene, Noah’s attorney, found the solution inside Claire’s first letter. She had sent notice of pregnancy to Vale headquarters before Noah was born. The mail log showed receipt. Harold redirected it.

Under trust law, fraud by the trustee suspended the deadline.

The court could not reward the concealment that created lateness.

At the hearing, Noah testified briefly.

He said he did not seek control of Vale Shipping. He sought recognition of a truth deliberately denied to both parents.

Victoria’s lawyer asked whether he planned to keep the shares.

Noah answered, “I plan to decide after they legally belong to me.”

Alexander smiled despite himself.

The judge recognized Noah as Alexander’s son and suspended the deadline permanently. One-third of the family shares moved into an independent trust chosen by Noah.

Outside court, cameras shouted questions.

“Will you call him father?”

“Will you take the company?”

“Do you forgive Victoria?”

“Are you changing your name?”

Noah stopped at the steps.

“My name is Noah Bennett. My mother raised me. Recognition does not erase that.”

Then he left.

Alexander remained behind, refusing to answer for him.

That restraint became the first public proof he understood fatherhood could not begin with possession.
