The Funeral They Never Had

Chapter 15 - The Funeral They Never Had
Alexander and Noah held a private memorial for Claire.
Not at the Vale estate.
At the small Oregon library where she worked for nineteen years.
Children had painted stars on the reading-room ceiling. A worn piano stood near the window. Claire’s colleagues placed photographs on a table: school plays, book drives, community dinners, Noah asleep beside stacks of returns.
Alexander appeared in none of them.
That absence was the center of his grief.
Noah played the piano badly, exactly as Claire had loved. He missed notes and continued. People laughed softly through tears.
Alexander spoke last.
He did not describe Claire as the lost love of his life. That would reduce the life she built without him.
He said, “I knew Claire before she became the person all of you knew. I wish I had earned the right to know every version.”
Afterward, Noah took him to Claire’s grave.
The stone carried only:
CLAIRE BENNETT
MOTHER, TEACHER, FINDER OF NORTH
Alexander placed the original train ticket beneath a small glass cover Noah had prepared.
He did not leave the compass pendant.
That belonged to Noah.
At sunset, Alexander asked whether Claire ever hated him.
Noah answered honestly.
“Sometimes.”
Alexander nodded.
“She loved you too.”
Both truths stayed beside the grave.

No dramatic forgiveness arrived.
Only a father and son standing where one woman’s silence finally ended.
