Victoria’s Invitation

Chapter 03 - Victoria’s Invitation

Victoria Vale did not panic when Noah called the estate.

She invited him for lunch.

That frightened him more.

The woman’s voice was warm, almost maternal. She said Alexander was in meetings but would be thrilled to learn about Claire. She offered to send a driver. Noah declined.

At the gate, security already knew his name.

A housekeeper led him through the glass corridor into Alexander’s private office. Victoria waited beside a table set for two, wearing a white silk suit and a diamond bracelet. Claire’s letters lay untouched in Noah’s backpack.

Victoria began with sympathy.

She said Alexander had suffered after Claire’s disappearance. She described Harold as controlling and implied the old man might indeed have acted cruelly. Then she asked about evidence.

Noah showed only the compass.

Victoria’s gaze changed.

She offered him money.

Not crudely. She called it restitution.

A trust.

A house.

A board position.

Anything that allowed the matter to remain private until Alexander was emotionally prepared.

Noah asked why truth needed a price.

Victoria smiled.

“Because families like ours are destroyed by timing, not facts.”

Then she mentioned Claire’s medical debts.

Noah had never told her about them.

He understood then that Victoria had already investigated him.

He stood to leave.

Two security guards appeared beyond the glass door.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

“The drive, Mr. Bennett.”

Noah’s heart hammered.

He had brought a decoy in his backpack. The real drive remained taped beneath the compass pendant. Claire taught him never to carry truth in only one place.

He handed Victoria the decoy.

She allowed him to leave the office but instructed security to escort him through the side exit.

That was when Alexander entered the corridor and placed a hand on Noah’s shoulder.

Victoria watched from behind the office glass.

At first, she expected Noah to remain silent.

Then he held up the compass.

Alexander’s face changed.

Victoria stepped into the corridor.

“This young man is confused,” she said.

Noah looked at her.

“You said that about my mother too.”

Alexander turned.

“What did you say to him?”

Victoria moved closer, lowering her voice.

“Alex, this is not the place.”

“No,” Noah said. “This is exactly the place.”

He gave Alexander the real drive.

Victoria’s composure cracked for one second.

That second told Alexander more than every word that followed.
