The Collapse Of North Wind

Chapter 14 - The Collapse Of North Wind
Federal investigators named the conspiracy North Wind after Harold’s ledger.
Charges reached beyond Victoria and Malcolm Crane.
Former Vale executives.
Private investigators.
A retired police captain.
A trust officer.
Two attorneys who processed false identities.
A doctor who certified Claire psychologically unstable without examination.
Malcolm was arrested in London and extradited.
Victoria faced fraud, obstruction, coercion, and conspiracy charges. She denied involvement in Claire’s original disappearance but admitted suppressing the truth afterward.
Her defense was love.
She said Alexander would have destroyed himself if Claire returned with a child. She said Vale Shipping would have collapsed. She said Sophia needed stability.
Prosecutors presented the letters.
Love became difficult to claim beside seventeen years of interception.
Alexander testified.
He did not exaggerate Victoria into a monster. He described her kindness during his depression, her care for Sophia, and the genuine life they shared.
Then he described the safe.
“Someone can love you and still build a prison from what they fear losing.”
Victoria looked at him through tears.
Noah attended only one day.
He heard Victoria say Claire accepted the first payment.
He stood to leave.
Alexander followed him into the corridor.
“My mother took the money,” Noah said.
“She was threatened.”
“She still took it.”
“Yes.”
Noah looked at him.
“You don’t have to make her perfect for me.”
The sentence freed Claire from becoming a saint and Noah from defending every survival choice.
She had been frightened.
She had made compromises.
She had protected her son imperfectly.
She had told the truth before death.

Humanity did not weaken her story.
It made it real.
