Claire’s Last Birthday Card

Chapter 09 - Claire’s Last Birthday Card

Claire’s final birthday card was never sealed.

She wrote it two days before entering hospice care.

Noah found it beneath the false bottom of her jewelry box.

Happy twenty-fourth, my brave boy.

I am sorry I built your life around a secret and called that protection. Your father may fail you when you meet him. He may also surprise you. Let him be a person before you decide whether he can be family.

Noah read the card alone.

He had spent years imagining Alexander as a villain. Then, after Claire’s confession, he imagined a perfect reunion. Both versions protected him from uncertainty.

The actual man was more difficult.

Alexander listened, but sometimes overreached. He sent a car without asking. He ordered a private medical review of Claire’s treatment, hoping to discover whether she might have lived longer. He began collecting Noah’s childhood photographs as if possession could reduce absence.

Noah confronted him.

“You cannot buy back time.”

Alexander answered too quickly.

“I know.”

“No. You know it as a sentence. You haven’t accepted it.”

The argument took place in the glass corridor.

The same place where they met.

Alexander’s shoulders tightened. Noah saw the powerful executive appear—the man accustomed to resolving discomfort through action.

Then Alexander stepped back.

“What would accepting it look like?”

Noah had no answer.

That helped.

They sat beside the pool in silence.

Eventually, Noah told him about Claire’s last birthday. She was too weak to bake, so they ate grocery-store cake from the box. She asked him to play piano. He played badly. She applauded anyway.

Alexander cried without hiding.

Noah did not comfort him.

Not because he was cruel.

Because grief did not always require fixing.

Later, he gave Alexander a copy of the card.

May you like

Not the original.

That boundary became a gift of its own.
