The Letters In The Safe

Chapter 07 - The Letters In The Safe

Victoria’s safe contained thirty-two letters.

Some were unopened.

Others had been read and returned to their envelopes with surgical care.

Claire wrote about Noah’s first steps, his fever at age three, his school science prize, his questions about his father. She included photographs Alexander had never seen.

In one image, Noah stood beside a cardboard boat painted blue.

On the back, Claire had written: He builds things when he is sad. Just like you.

Alexander sat on the floor of the guest wing and read until darkness filled the windows.

Victoria watched from the doorway under attorney supervision.

“I was protecting our marriage,” she said.

Alexander looked up.

“From a child?”

“From Harold. From scandal. From a woman who could destabilize everything.”

“She wanted me to know my son.”

“She wanted access to your life.”

The answer revealed Victoria’s deepest belief: love and access were the same currency.

Alexander held up a letter dated twelve years earlier.

Claire had written that Harold was dead and asked whether it was finally safe to speak. Victoria replied in Alexander’s name.

Do not contact me again. I have a family now.

Alexander’s signature was forged beneath the sentence.

Noah read the letter later and said nothing for several minutes.

“My mother believed this.”

Alexander could not apologize enough.

“It was not you,” Noah said.

“It carried my name.”

“That matters. But it was not your choice.”

The distinction became both mercy and responsibility.

Victoria insisted she prevented Claire from disrupting a fragile man. She described Alexander’s depression after the disappearance, his drinking, the years he could barely work.

“I saved you,” she said.

Alexander looked at the letters.

“No. You made my grief permanent because it made me easier to keep.”

Victoria’s composure finally broke.

She had loved Alexander. She also loved the life built around his dependence. Claire and Noah threatened both.

The safe contained one final item.

The original medical record confirming Claire’s pregnancy before her disappearance.

Harold had known.

Victoria had known.

Alexander had been the last person inside his own family to learn he was a father.
