The Key On The Marble

Chapter 01 - The Key On The Marble
Sebastian Hale pointed toward the open front doors of the glass mansion.
“Take your suitcase and leave.”
His voice carried through the white marble foyer where florists were still arranging flowers for the wedding. Behind him stood Madison Reed in a sleeveless white rehearsal gown, one hand wrapped around his arm. Her eyes were wet, but Elena Hale had learned that Madison’s tears often appeared before anyone asked a difficult question.
Elena remained beside the curved stone table.
At forty-six, she was too young to look like Sebastian’s mother and too old to be dismissed as his father’s final mistake. She wore a fitted black dress, small gold earrings, and the calm expression that had made the Hale family call her cold whenever grief failed to look dramatic enough.
A silver suitcase stood near her feet.
“You searched my office,” Sebastian said. “You transferred money from the family account, contacted the trust lawyer, and tried to stop my wedding.”
“I tried to stop a transfer scheduled to happen after your wedding.”
Madison tightened her grip on him.
“She is doing this because your father left her nothing.”
Elena looked at the young woman.
“Jonathan left me the truth.”
Sebastian stepped closer.
“My father is dead. You do not get to use him against me.”
From the sitting room, Eleanor Hale—Jonathan’s seventy-six-year-old mother—watched from a pale sofa. She had been unusually quiet since arriving from her medical residence. Her silver hair was perfectly arranged, but her hands trembled in her lap.
Elena reached into her handbag.
Sebastian expected papers.
Instead, she removed the black key fob to Jonathan Hale’s Aston Martin and placed it gently on the marble.
“You should ask your fiancée why this key was found in her attorney’s safe.”
Madison went pale.
Elena then raised her phone.
The screen showed a paused video recorded inside a parked car. Madison sat in the passenger seat beside family attorney Conrad Shaw. On her lap rested the Hale Family Trust. Conrad held Eleanor’s signature stamp.
Sebastian stared.
Elena pressed play.
Madison’s recorded voice filled the foyer.
Once we are married, Sebastian signs the incapacity petition. Eleanor loses her vote, Elena loses the house, and the Reed company gets the land.
Eleanor gasped and pressed one hand to her chest.
Sebastian looked at the woman in white behind him.

Elena closed the video.
“The wedding was never the destination,” she said. “It was the signature they needed to steal everything after midnight.”
