The Son Without A Title

Chapter 16 - The Son Without A Title

Sebastian left Hale Urban Properties.

The council required a two-year separation before considering him for governance. He moved from the mansion into a small apartment near the South Shore clinics and enrolled in a public-interest property program.

Nobody there cared who his father had been.

His first assignment involved interviewing tenants whose building had been neglected by a Hale contractor. A woman showed him mold spreading across her child’s bedroom. Maintenance records marked the problem resolved.

The signature belonged to an executive Sebastian once praised.

He began understanding how fraud looked away from chandeliers.

Not dramatic.

Not elegant.

A checkbox marked complete while someone continued breathing contaminated air.

Sebastian worked under supervision. He organized repair records, attended tenant meetings, and learned to remain silent when people described harm caused by his family’s company.

At first, every apology centered his shame.

A tenant advocate corrected him.

“We do not need you to feel worse. We need the vent repaired.”

He remembered Elena asking for action instead of family theater.

Sebastian stopped performing remorse.

He learned systems.

Two years later, the council offered him a nonvoting advisory role. He accepted without requesting his father’s chair.

Eleanor attended the first meeting and sat in the public row.

Elena watched online from her own apartment.

The family remained connected.

It no longer sat above everyone else.
