Conrad Behind The Glass

Chapter 10 - Conrad Behind The Glass

Conrad Shaw attempted to leave the country.

Airport officials stopped him after Mara obtained an emergency warrant tied to financial fraud and elder abuse. In his luggage were trust copies, cryptocurrency devices, and a second passport.

He requested immunity.

Then he began explaining how everyone else created the scheme.

Reed Development needed land.

Madison needed marriage.

Eleanor feared losing relevance.

Sebastian resented the trust.

Elena moved money without permission.

Conrad described himself as the professional who gave clients options.

Investigators found those options began years earlier.

During Jonathan’s illness, Conrad altered meeting summaries so the medical-campus sale appeared more advanced than it was. He charged hidden fees to both Hale Urban Properties and Reed Development. He selected the private physician who later treated Eleanor.

Most damaging, he intercepted Jonathan’s instruction removing him as family attorney.

The instruction had been recorded inside the Aston Martin.

Jonathan confronted Conrad three weeks before his death.

“You have mistaken access for ownership,” Jonathan said in the recording.

Conrad replied, “Access is what ownership becomes when the owner is weak.”

Sebastian watched with Mara.

He had trusted Conrad because the attorney spoke with certainty after Jonathan died. Grief made firm answers feel like competence.

Mara showed him the original termination notice.

Sebastian’s digital signature appeared beneath a later reinstatement.

He had never signed it.

Conrad copied the signature from a condolence letter.

The manipulation did not begin with Madison.

It began when Conrad realized Sebastian wanted someone else to carry the complexity of adulthood.

He provided certainty in exchange for authority.

Behind interview-room glass, Conrad continued bargaining.

Mara turned off the audio.

“Do not make the mistake of thinking intelligence prevents manipulation,” she told Sebastian.

“What prevents it?”

“Independent witnesses. Complete records. And people willing to be disliked when they ask questions.”

Sebastian thought of Elena leaving with the suitcase.

He finally understood what his father had trusted in her.

Not obedience.

Resistance.
